The North River Community Lions Club was organized January 18, 1960, as the Lions Club of Marshfield (Massachusetts), and was chartered by Lions Clubs International with that name on March 19, 1960. Sponsors of the then new club were the Abington Lions Club and the Whitman Lions Club, The formation of the club was a direct result of a visually impaired clergyperson in Marshfield receiving a guide dog from a Lions Club in a neighboring town.

At the time of its formation, there were Lions clubs in the neighboring communities of Pembroke, Scituate and Norwell. Over the years, those clubs disbanded, but the club in Marshfield continued on and its membership gradually begain to encompass men and women from all four towns. The club realized that it truly was serving four communities, all of which shared the common boundary of the North River. In recent years, the club began to promote itself as “serving the North River Communities of Marshfield, Pembroke, Norwell and Scituate.” Finally, in 2007, the club petitioned Lions Clubs International to change its name to The North River Community Lions Club. The new name became official in April, 2008.

Lions are members of the world’s largest and most active community service organization. At the urging of Helen Keller, Lions are "knights of the blind," and have focused the majority of their efforts toward helping to find cures and treatments for preventable blindness. Lions’ main charity is sight conservation; in Massachusetts, Lions support and enable the work of the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc.  Lions are men and women, 18 years of age and older, who have decided to give something back to their community. They are folks dedicated to serving those "who are less fortunate than themselves!"

The charitable arm of The North River Community Lions Club is the North River Community Lions Club Foundation, a non-profit charitable corporation approved under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code.   All fund-raising activities and charitable donations are under the direction of this Foundation. All gifts to The North River Community Lions Club are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The North River Community Lions Club meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, September through June, at 7:00 PM at Courtney’s Restaurant, Route 139, Marshfield, Massachusetts.
